Brattle Hall, which houses the Brattle Theatre, was built in 1871 by The Cambridge Social Union as a multipurpose space. With the depression in 1929, the Social Union membership fell and the hall was rented to a variety of tenants including the Cambridge Center for Adult Education and a number of professional theater companies.
